The Six-Step Editing Sequence
Process every episode in this order for consistent results:
Step 1: Content Edit (Structural)
Listen through the entire recording and mark segments to remove: false starts, tangents, repeated explanations, long pauses, and any content that does not serve the episode's core message. Cut for clarity and pacing. A 90-minute raw recording typically yields a 45-60 minute published episode.
Step 2: Noise Reduction
Apply noise reduction to remove consistent background noise — HVAC hum, computer fan, room tone. Capture a 'noise profile' from a silent section of the recording (2-3 seconds where no one is speaking). Use this profile to subtract the noise floor without affecting voice quality.
Step 3: Equalization
Apply a high-pass filter at 80 Hz to remove low-frequency rumble (handling noise, footsteps, traffic). Gently boost the presence range (2-5 kHz) to improve speech clarity. Cut any harsh resonant frequencies specific to the speaker's microphone/room combination.
Step 4: Compression
Dynamic range compression evens out volume differences between loud and quiet passages. For speech, use a ratio of 3:1 to 4:1, threshold set so the compressor activates on louder syllables, and a fast attack (5-10 ms) to catch transients.
Step 5: Loudness Normalization
Normalize the finished edit to the target loudness standard. Podcast platforms expect -16 LUFS (mono) or -19 LUFS (stereo). Use integrated loudness metering to measure the entire episode, then apply gain to hit the target.
Step 6: Export
Export to MP3 at 128 kbps CBR mono (the podcast distribution standard). Add ID3 tags: episode title, show name, episode number, description, and artwork. Verify the file plays correctly from start to finish before uploading.
